Mountaineers and Libraries Kickoff Fourth Touchdown Challenge

The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the WVU Libraries are teaming up again for the Mountaineer Touchdown Challenge, a fundraising campaign to benefit the Libraries.
The initiative, in its fourth year, enables participants to pledge a dollar amount per touchdown the Mountaineers score during the 2014 season and any subsequent bowl game. The proceeds will support a project within the Libraries.
“I am proud that the Mountaineer football team and the WVU Libraries are again teaming up for the Touchdown Challenge,” Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. “Our Libraries are central to the University’s academic mission. I encourage our alumni and fans to participate in this fun opportunity to support academics while cheering for the Mountaineers.”
Head football coach Dana Holgorsen helped launch the Touchdown Challenge when he came to WVU in 2011. He likes that the program benefits all students and spotlights the importance of academics.
“We remind our players that they are student-athletes – being a student comes first,” Holgorsen said. “WVU students have access to great libraries, great resources, and great library employees who can help students achieve their full potential academically.”
Funds raised through the Touchdown Challenge have supported multiple purchases and enhancements within the Libraries. Most recently, student requests fueled the acquisition of digital cameras, editing software, and other equipment to transform a study room in the Downtown Campus Library into a space where students can practice making presentations.
Student feedback will determine where funds raised during the 2014 Touchdown Challenge are directed.
“It is exciting for the Libraries to benefit from West Virginia University’s impressive football tradition,” said Dean of Libraries Dr. Jon E. Cawthorne. “We appreciate Oliver Luck, Coach Holgorsen, every player, and every loyal fan, and we are enthusiastic about the success we will see on the field and through the Touchdown Challenge.”
