Jesse Hilton Stuart (August 8, 1906 – February 17, 1984) was born and raised in the small community of W-Hollow, Kentucky, just west of Huntington, West Virginia.  He is known for his short stories, poetry, and novels about Southern Appalachia.

In early 2000, Maryan Dahmer of Pendleton County donated 67 books by and about Stuart, over 100 letters written to her by Stuart, and many periodicals and news clippings.  Thanks to her, WVRHC patrons can study Stuart in depth through the Maryan Dahmer Jesse Stuart Collection in the WVU Libraries Rare Books Room, the Jesse Stuart Papers, and microfilm copies of Stuart’s scrapbooks.  Copies of Stuart’s books are also available to check out from the Downtown Library Appalachian Collection and the Evansdale Library Children’s Collection.
