WVU Libraries has made research a little easier for psychology faculty and students with the addition of PsycARTICLES, an online database of 43 journals from the field.
“It’s the difference between night and day,” psychology professor Stan Cohen said. “The time savings alone will be incredible.”

If you have some spare time, slip on over to the Downtown Campus Library atrium and check out an exhibit on WVU’s electronic thesis and dissertation program – all to the sounds of roaring jazz and fingersnapping blues.
The exhibit includes both a physical display for traditionalists and an online version for the computersavvy.

The West Virginia University Research Corp. has fulfilled a $1 million commitment to enhance the collection at the WVU Libraries.
John Weete, president of the Research Corp., announced that a
recent payment of more than $73,000 brought the total contribution from the Library Challenge Grant Program to $1 million.
“The West Virginia University Research Corp. has been proud to
contribute to strengthening the library resources and thus provide
additional support for WVU faculty and student researchers and scholars,” said Weete, who is also vice president of research and economic development.

The West Virginia University Foundation will dedicate 771 Scholarship Bricks to serve as the foundation of a Scholars Walk at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Downtown Library Complex.
With the Scholarship Brick Walkway, the Foundation and West
Virginia University are recognizing those donors who have invested in the lives of WVU students. Each brick is engraved with the name of an endowed scholarship created at the University.

Move over, Book-of-the-Month Club. The WVU electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) collection has been accessed more than 2.1 million times since inception.
Implemented as a requirement in August 1998, the ETD Initiative has several purposes, including helping students promote their careers, assisting learners and researchers within and outside WVU, and making available many scholarly works that were
previously inaccessible.

Students walking the stairways of the new Wise Library will notice the orange walls with blue hand railings surrounding them. Natural light will stream in from the windows on both sides of the building. Circles seem to dominate throughout the library.
These aspects are ones they are hoping will help students feel more comfortable in the library, according to Ruth Nellis, coordinator of library construction.

MORGANTOWN — Packing up the contents of a library and moving them to another location is not like moving the contents of your home.
Do your spoons have to be numbered and placed in order? And if you don’t unpack a box or two as long as you own your home, will anyone care?
But when officials at West Virginia University start transferring thousands of books and periodicals to the new campus library next month, you can be sure the movers will possess expertise in moving heavy objects and in keeping them in order.
“This is like throwing the contents of 20 to 50 households all together and having everything end up in the right order,” said project coordinator Ruth Nellis. “If everything gets out of order, it’s a major problem. We’d prefer to be able to find everything.”

The new addition to the Wise Library is nearing its completion. Penny Pugh, head of reference and government information services, said the addition should be completed by the first day of the Spring 2002 semester. She also added that this date depends on the construction and any delays that might occur.

John Cuthbert, curator of the West Virginia and Regional History Collection, joined the ranks of Sen. Robert C. Byrd, writer Denise Giardina and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gate Jr. during an Oct. 12 ceremony in Charleston.
WVU art historian Dr. John Cuthbert has been honored by the West Virginia Humanities Council for his work in fostering the arts in the Mountain State.
Cuthbert, the author and editor of the critically acclaimed book “Early Art and Artists in West Virginia,” received the Charles H. Daugherty Award in the Humanities in Charleston.
A frequent contributor to national publications like American Music and American Art Review, Cuthbert’s other books are “David Hunter Stroher: One of the Best Draughtsmen the Country Possesses,” and “The Edden Hammons Collection.”

The Glenwood Series starts its second year at 4 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood, the historic estate on Charleston’s West Side, when John Cuthbert, author of the book “Early Art and Artists in West Virginia,” gives a lecture related to his book.
The Marshall University Graduate College Foundation sponsors the lecture. In 1978, Lucy Quarrier, the house’s last resident, gave Glenwood to the West Virginia Graduate College Foundation, which is opening the estate to the public through these programs.
Three University Libraries employees recently traveled to Wyoming County to assist Pineville residents who were affected by July’s floods. Associate University Librarian Jo. Brown, Library Technical Assistant Sue Wang and Library Associate Judi McCracken agreed that the experience was rewarding.

JoAnn Calzonetti, director of the Evansdale Library, has received the first Distinguished Service Award from the WVU Libraries.
In March 1997, the WVU Research Corp. and the WVU Foundation joined together to raise $1.5 million for the WVU Libraries, over a five-year period, through the Faculty and Staff Annual Fund.
“The Research Corporation is interested in supporting research at the University, so we are very pleased that we could invest the money into the library,” said John Weete, director of Research Corp.
The Research Corp. agreed to match two dollars for every dollar contributed by the WVU community to support collection development through library endowments.

Nearly 4,000 full-text electronic journals are available online to WVU faculty and students through a newly developed service on the Libraries web site at www.libraries.wvu.edu/journals. Researchers can use the site to search for individual journals by title and to connect to the journals in one step. The service greatly expands access to electronic journals, making them available at any time from any location.
Electronic journals available from the site cover all disciplines and include scholarly publications such as Journal of Applied Physics, British Journal of Sociology, Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, and Nineteenth-Century Literature. News and general interest publications such as Newsweek, Forbes, and Variety are also included.

Jim and Ann Milano, formerly of Monongalia County, have pledged $500,000 to benefit the Charles C. Wise, Jr. Library at West Virginia University.
The gift is two-fold: Half will be used to renovate the library’s East Reading Room. The remaining $250,000 will create the James V. and Ann Pozega Milano Reading Room and Collection Endowment Fund. The endowment will maintain and replace the furnishings in the room, which will be named for the Milanos, and support the acquisition and preservation of the Appalachian Collection, to be housed in the Milano Reading Room.
“We owe our beginnings to WVU. We made this gift because we wanted to give something back to the University,” said Jim Milano.
